The Simpsons and us

Having sat through another new Simpsons episode I was thinking – is this the TV show of our generation?

The Simpsons is one of my most loved and most watched programmes. I believe this to be the same for many of my peers. I know it’s adored by people of all ages but for me its 1989 debut sparked the beginning of my childhood. From then on, The Simpsons became a staple of every kid’s early evening TV viewing and I can’t remember a time when it hasn’t been on TV, either as new episodes or repeats.

The best thing about The Simpsons is its multi-leveled humour. This is thanks to the brilliant writing of  James L Brooks, Matt Groening, and Sam Simon, ensuring that at age five I was able to laugh at the fart jokes delivered by Bart, and now 18 years later I can understand the subtle cracks at celebrities or political humour that enables the show to take on entirely different guise.

We are the generation that ‘grew up’ with The Simpsons. Because of this, phrases such as D’oh, eeeexcellent and HA-ha are now part of our daily vocabulary. I believe these phrases are used by Gen Y far more than any other generation.

So to finish off I’ll leave you with some Simpsons trivia thanks to IMDb:

  • Milhouse’s middle name is Mussolini
  • Homer, Bart and Lisa are the only characters to have dialogue in every episode. Marge also appeared in every episode, but she did not deliver any dialogue in the episode ‘Krusty Gets Kancelled
  • The main characters were given a yellow coloring to attract the attention of channel hoppers
  • Characters’ full names: Lisa Marie Simpson, Bartholomew Jojo Simpson, and Homer Jay Simpson

Are there any other TV shows that could take the title? Happy for your thoughts…
